Scintilla [sɪnˈtɪlə] a minute amount; hint, trace, or particle [from Latin: a spark]
Through playful interventions these artists create a ‘non place’, a meeting ground between the fictional and what actually exists. There is a notion that we are being presented with a glimpse or fragment of reality, veiled only by the finest gauze of illusion. Viewers are invited to cultivate and engage with their own narratives, therefore entering into a dialogue within this dichotomy.
CHLOE BROOKS My works have a simplicity to them, transforming the
gallery with an economy of means. Many of them act
almost as a backdrop to other activity in an exhibition space –
subverting and affecting the way the space is viewed and used. Through
displacing aspects of architecture, multiple associations and ambiguous
situations are created. My intention is for the viewer to see and experience
the space in a new or unaccustomed way, filling the familiar with a new
vitality.' 25th February - 18th March 2011
HELEN EDLING ‘I create my own worlds, starting threads for possible imaginary journeys and constructing spaces for potential interaction and engagement. With an interest in social systems and, people’s dreams and fears, I create physical or time bound constructions. With an open narrative that builds on strong parallels to a staged play, I place the viewer in the centre, letting them become the narrator, the director or the puppet master.’
